A prolific painter whose flamboyant and colorful canvases depict a moneyed society filled with art-world luminaries such as modern artist Marcel Duchamp and photographer Alfred Stieglitz, Florine Stettheimer was a consummate early-20th-century bohemian who also belonged to elite circles. A Jazz Age early feminist icon and poet as well as a set designer, Stettheimer was born in New York into a wealthy family of German Jewish heritage. Over 50 of her paintings as well as her poems, sculpture and costume and set designs are on display in “Florine Stettheimer: Painting Poetry,” a new exhibit at The Jewish Museum in New York through September 24. Among the lush, vibrant artwork in the exhibit are paintings of Stettheimer and her family in the well-appointed Manhattan apartment she shared with her mother and two sisters, and images of her famous friends at the salons she and her family hosted for the city’s avant-garde.
