‘The Warsaw Ghetto in American Art and Culture’
The Warsaw Ghetto in American Art and Culture by Samantha Baskind (Penn State University Press, 288 pp. $44.95)
This illustrated tome commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which began on April 19, 1943, with the inclusion of works from artists and authors, poets and playwrights who portrayed the heroism of the fighters, the devastation of the ghetto and the suffering of the children. Among the many illustrations are Arthur Szyk’s striking Battle of the Warsaw Ghetto; several studies by Samuel Bak of the little Warsaw Ghetto boy; and Jon Bogdanove’s Superman Breaks the Wall!—a comic book telling of the wished-for liberation from the ghetto by Superman’s Jewish creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
