FROM ZERO TO SIXTY: Looking Back and Ahead
As Israel celebrates the 60th anniversary of its independence, consider how much life, identity and security have changed for Jews around the world because a Jewish state exists. In this special issue, Hadassah Magazine looks at the distance Israel has traveled in six decades from many angles: Which problems have been solved and which remain? What has been the Israeli experience and how has it altered over time? How have American Jews related to Israel over the generations? And does anyone have an idea what the country will look like in 2048, when it observes its 100th birthday? Our writers also bring the anniversary into focus through conversations with prominent Israelis who have witnessed the full sweep of the country’s tumultuous history. Spread throughout the magazine are a variety of reponses to the question, “What has been Israel’s most important achievement?” Finally, we take a lighthearted look at the country’s cultural evolution in a pictorial chart.
